Why can’t they find Haleigh Cummings?
Sunday marked 90 days since Haleigh Cummings vanished without a trace from a bedroom in her house in Satsuma, Florida. After a massive search and with an ongoing investigation, the mystery surrounding her disappearance and the allegations and inuendos from those close to the case have kept Haleigh (some would say –her family, not her) in the spotlight and have left many following the case shaking their heads in disbelief.
“We don’t know for sure what’s happened, but we do know that somewhere down the end of the line there’s going to be some type of crime involved,” Capt. Dick Schauland, a spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, said Friday. (Well, DUH! Statements like that make me seriously question the intelligence of those in charge of finding this little girl–This young child has been gone for 3 months and no one knows where she is–wouldn’t it go without saying that a crime was involved????)
Aside from general (and in the quote above, idiotic) statements, LE has refused to talk publicly about what investigators might have found out.
“We also have to maintain a criminal investigation and we have to maintain the integrity of that,” Schauland said. “Should we be able to release something that would help us locate Haleigh we would certainly do that even if it would compromise the criminal investigation.”
Capt. Schauland said they are still investigating Haleigh’s disappearance—even though there is other county business his department has to take care of as well.
“Obviously there are other things going on in the county too, but nonetheless the investigators are still working,” Schauland said. “Hundreds and hundreds of interviews have been done, and they are still doing them.”
“Everybody in that whole area within a mile of the house they have interviewed at last three times, and of course with family members they’ve done as many as 10 times,” Schauland said.
The stress on the family has been unrelenting and they all still hold out hope.
On the Cummings side, Ron and Misty Cummings have moved in with his grandmother, Annette Sykes.
“Every day is a little harder,” Ms. Sykes said Friday. “We still have candlelight vigils every night.”
Teresa Neves, Cummings’ mother, said the vigils are open to the public and take place on Front Street in Welaka.
“I just want to thank everyone for their prayers,” Neves said.
As for the Sheffields, Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh’s mother, travels between her home in Baker County and the ” Haleighbug Center” in Satsuma.
“Primarily what it’s being used for is that we are going to pick back up some fund-raisers and keep the word out about Haleigh still being missing,” Kim Picazio, Sheffield’s attorney, said.
“The funds go to keeping flyers printed, T-shirts, keeping the word out in this town and surrounding towns to let them know that this child is still missing and that law enforcement needs any information that could possibly lead to finding her.” (see: http://itsamysterytome.wordpress.com/2009/03/23/crystal-sheffields-haleigh-bug-foundation-is-open-for-business/ to learn more about the Haleigh Bug Foundation…………………)
Crystal recently had several seizures, one of which took place at the center.
“It’s very stressful for her to sit at the Haleighbug Center,” Picazio said. “I can’t imagine after this long as a mom.”
Picazio hired a full-time employee to work at the Center, paying for it with her own funds.
Ron’s grandmother believes Haleigh is still alive and stated simply,
“Whoever has her, bring her home.”
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m really seriously wondering why there have been no arrests at all for anything in this case? Is the FBI involved in the on-going investigations or is the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in charge? Has anyone been cleared? Why haven’t they arrested Misty Croslin, who clearly has not cooperated fully, for withholding evidence and changing her story a hundred times (Is that even a charge?) Has Crystal’s extended family been questioned? Has Ron’s? Why has everyone been so closed-mouthed? Is this case going to go cold for lack of action on the part of the authorities and the lack of cooperation by the parties involved? (I’m not just talking about the families) Lots of questions but no answers.
It all continues to be a A Mystery To Me…except for one thing———————-
