Has Jose Baez become Casey Anthony’s booking agent?
Are book and movie deals paying for Casey Anthony’s defense? Allegations have been brought before the State Attorney’s Office about where the funding is coming from. Baez has refused from the beginning to discuss how he was getting paid. If he has made some kind of deal with an entertainment company as is being suggested, his paycheck (or the size of it) could be subject to the outcome of the case. For example, if Casey ends up on trial as opposed to making a deal with the prosecution, he would hit a much bigger jackpot. This obviously could cause a conflict of interest between his “employers” and his client, and is a practice that is banned by the Florida Bar Association. It could, if he does choose the entertainment company’s best interests over those of Casey, be grounds for disbarment.
Baez has apparently already received $200,000 from what is thought to have been photographs of Caylee, but the terms of that contract were unclear.
“Because of the nature of this case and, creatively, the abundance of the rumors of the source of the attorney fees,” WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer told Eyewitness News “This court will probably make an inquiry that they’ll err on the side of caution.”
It’s not clear how the judge will handle it, but he will want to make sure there is no conflict of interest and to prevent an appeal. Sheaffer said the judge will likely look into Baez’s funding source to make sure there is no conflict of interest and to prevent an appeal.
“It is to make sure the lawyer is representing the client’s best interest and not considering the interest of who’s paying the attorney’s fee,” Sheaffer said.
A spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office said the state is aware of the allegations. Prosecutors want to know who is paying his fees and how much money has been spent. Jose Baez’s spokesperson said Baez has not made any contingent deals. He said Baez is involved with coordinating licensing fees and deals with various production companies, but does not profit on those matters. (Then my question is, WHO DOES?? Somebody is profiting or why would he be making any deals–Cindy and George? Casey?)
You know, I don’t give a flip how the defense gets paid. I don’t care if they get paid at all. I don’t care if Casey Anthony chooses to pay her attorney by telling her OWN sorry story of how she became the monster she is. I don’t care if Baez chooses to pay himself by telling the story of his backroom association with Casey Anthony. I don’t care if the Anthonys choose to pay their mortgage by airing Casey’s dirty laundry.I don’t even care if all the people Casey Anthony has ever come in contact with choose to sell their sordid memories of life with Casey and then head on down to the Caribbean to celebrate their new found fortunes.
I say to all of them, GO FOR IT, and good luck with that. BUT, don’t you DARE try to make money by spinning Caylee’s story! I don’t want to see one single person lining their pockets with blood money from the exploitation of that little girl’s death or taking 1 red cent for photos from that baby’s personal life. The only story I want to hear about Caylee is that justice has been served and her death has been avenged. The only photos I want to see are of her killer being sentenced to life in prison. When Casey or Cindy or George or Jose or ANYONE uses Caylee’s story as their meal tickets they’ve crossed the line of human decency and IMO will be joining her murderer in hell.
