The real reason Casey Anthony could be convicted–and it has nothing to do with the Salem Witch Trials

January 7, 2010
Vodpod videos no longer available.
Andrea Lyons made an appearance on the Today show this morning to promote her new book, “Angel of Deathrow”.  She talked at length to Meredith Vieira about Casey Anthony, and IMO  some of the statements made were simply outrageous.
Among other things, Lyon compared Casey Anthony’s treatment in the press to the Salem Witch Trials!

“The fact that she’s been pilloried in the press … I would liken this, Meredith, to the Salem witch trials,” Lyon said.

“The intense media scrutiny here has made it, as far as I can see, virtually impossible to get a fair trial.”

Lyon went on to say,

“She didn’t kill her kid.”

When Vieira asked, “You’re absolutely sure without a doubt?”

Lyon said.

“I’m sure…..There’s not even any evidence that this was a homicide, let alone any evidence tying her to it.

Lyon said that no one should be subjected to the  “barbaric” death penalty.

This is just…just…..I’m sputtering here….unbelievable!

First of all,  that baby was found in a trashbag with duct tape over her mouth.  Pretty sure that’s convincing evidence that she didn’t die in her sleep from natural causes. As far as evidence tying Casey to her death…..

I’m going to tell you a true story that happened to my family last week.  Our son and his little family have a pet pug named Bruce Lee the Wonder Dog.  Well, Bruce went out to go the bathroom Friday night around 8:00, and within 5 minutes he had disappeared.  The kids bundled up their baby and went looking for him in the dark for 2 hours.  The next day they were both basket cases. They looked for him before work and my husband and I made fliers and went over later to let their neighbors know.  When we got there, my daughter-in-laws Dad was already on the scene going door-to-door.  We called all the vets in town, the radio stations, and put ads in the local paper. We went to the pound and put up fliers offering a reward anywhere and everywhere we could think of.  We were literally sick at heart.  Sunday, we got a call that turned out to be the one neighbor that didn’t answer the door when we were passing out fliers in the area.  Her grandson said he was “pretty sure it’s your dog.”   I went to check it out,  and it was Bruce–with a badly broken front leg.   The neighbor said, “Well, we thought it might be their dog because we had seen him around their house–but, I think I’ll take that reward.”  (That’s a post on it’s own.  I’m still angry that the NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR, who more than likely hit the dog with their car and kept him in their house all weekend when he needed help, TOOK THE REWARD, too!)  Bruce has at this moment cost our kids over $1000.00 in vet bills,  and it’s still not certain he will have use of that leg again because of the length of time between the break and the surgery…. But, I digress)

The point of my story is that our family was more distressed over a dog than Casey Anthony was over her own baby!  What there is no evidence of, Ms. Lyon, is that Casey Anthony even tried to look for Caylee,  and there certainly is no evidence that she would ever have alerted authorities that her daughter was missing if Cindy Anthony had not forced her hand.  Her conflicting “explanations” after she was caught (when she bothered to provide explanations)  about what happened to Caylee and why she didn’t call the police, have all proved to be false.

If it is that distressing to lose a pet, how much more distressing should it be to lose your child!!  Ms. Lyon can proselytize all she wants.  She can put on her sad face and say WHATEVER  about her “innocent” client, but if the fact that Casey Anthony didn’t report her daughter missing for 31 days is allowable evidence (which it is),  there is no jury in the world that won’t convict her,  whether they are familiar with the case or not–and it won’t be because she was vilified in the press, and it won’t be because she’s the victim of mass hysteria by the public like in the Salem Witch trials, and it won’t be because there isn’t any evidence that the child was murdered at all.  It will be (along with very strong evidence, circumstantial or otherwise) because Casey Anthony, mother of Caylee Anthony, daughter of George and Cindy Anthony, decided for whatever reason, be it intentional or accidental, that she would just go on with her life like nothing ever happened when Caylee seemingly vanished from the face of the earth. She didn’t report her daughter missing, Cindy did. Everything Casey did from the moment she made that decision points to her guilt, and there is just no way around that no matter how good a lawyer you perceive yourself to be.

And another thing, if you don’t want this case smeared all over the television and the internet, there’s a simple way to remedy that—DON’T TALK ABOUT IT!!

Brilliant post! Also Casey Anthony NEVER reported her daughter missing. Cindy did. That is a big point that we need to reiterate.
Casey NEVER reported Caylee missing. Never

You are absolutely right, artgal. Cindy reported her missing, and Casey only spoke to the 9-1-1 dispatcher when she was forced to. I stand corrected, and corrected it in the post. Thanks.

Hey Mystery! I’m so glad to know the kids found Bruce Lee. How sad that he was injured and didn’t get immediate care, but I’m glad that he’s alive and I will say a prayer for the little guy.

Leading police on a wild goose chase, to her “job” at Universal, to pole dancing at Club Fusion. Does Lyons think we are as stupid as she is ugly? Any person of above average intelligence would have reason to suspect Casey. Media or no media.

    Excellent true life analogy.
I can’t say anything nice about Lyon’s appearance on the Today Show. Even if I were anti-death penalty I’d have a hard time finding reason to cheer this woman on.
“…her kid”, boy, didn’t that remark rouse up sympathy for Casey, The Innocent…not!

They don’t really seem to care about victims. Only criminals. And their own fame and fortune.

  8. January 7, 2010 12:02 pm

They are really trying to disconnect saying “her kid”. They have no feelings or sympathy for Caylee. To them, she is a burden in their defense that rightly dehumanizes their client. No reasonable/common sense 12 jurors will allow her to walk. The problem will be if just 1 of these idiots who could be considered a peer of hers or one these so called “backers” of her innocence manages to land in the jury and intentionally throws a monkey in the wrench. If CMA had only “acted” like she cared, reported Caylee missing and at least threw LE some truths her situation would be different. She screwed herself big time with her own actions, lies and silence. No loving parent would EVER do what she did and the Bruce Lee dog story is an example of how sociopathic she really is. Her arse begans getting cooked 1/25.

mikka–I agree with you. Yes, the death penalty could be called barbaric, but then, so could a person who committed a crime that put him in the position of receiving the death penalty be called barbaric.

I am happy you found Bruce Lee. I freak out every time someone opens my drive gate, because Eastwood(my 8 month old yellow lab) hears those wheels and gets hyped up to greet everyone and jump all over them like Marley and I worry someone will be walking down the street and he’s going to bolt after them to say hello and get ran over!

If they really felt the case was being unfairly tried in the media, and her right to a fair trial was at risk, then the defense probably shouldn’t have fought the gag order that the state proposed way back at the beginning of this circus. And they should probably stop flooding the airwaves with biased misinformation that they refuse to back up with any facts, claiming “the truth will come out at trial.”

If Casey Anthony is a victim, then Andrea Lyons is a supermodel…

I am always amused that Lyons and Baez continue to refer to 5000+ pages of documentation as “no evidence”.

I guess they think that if they repeat the lie enough, everyone will eventually forget that the Medical Examiner declared the death a homicide. The Medical Examiner who is extensively trained and objective determined enough evidence remained to declare Caylee’s death a homicide. I would like Lyons and Baez to describe their level of expertise in these matters and if it trumps that of the examiner. Are they claiming that they know more than her or that she is lying about her determination as part of a conspiracy to make sure the state is right? Why would she do that? What could she possibly gain? Or asked another way, what could Lyons and Baez gain by claiming the opposite?

Baez and Lyons both stand to gain money with their claims, yet the medical examiner stands to gain nothing except the loss of her reputation and employment by making false assertations.

“I know this is hard to believe, folks, but she is innocent, she really is… mostly innocent… certain facts set aside, she is innocent… if you ignore the events of a specific month, she is completely innocent… if it weren’t for the intense media scrutiny in this case, then.. oh, excuse me… I am getting the signal… we are out of time, I have to rush to get to another media interview… don’t forget to buy Andrea’s book… I am getting a cut too… I will be signing 8×10 glossies in the lobby… just $10 each…”

    Hey Niecey–

Update on Bruce: My son took him outside to potty on his leash this morning and he tried to jump up on the porch before he could stop him and ripped everything apart again. He’s in his second surgery as we speak. The absolutely wonderful vet told them that he wasn’t going to charge them at all for the second surgery, would keep him at the hospital free of charge for at least a week or more, and the medications he would require would also be free. He said Bruce had kept him awake at night with worry and he really wanted to fix him.

Here I was lamenting the lack of empathy and moral obligation in people today (the next door neighbor) and then someone like this man comes along and completely floors me with his kindness.

    Hi Wolfman–

I guess they think the masses will believe anything you want them to if you keep repeating it often enough. Big mistake on their part!

You know, I get it that everyone deserves and by law gets a defense. I understand that it is a defense attorney’s job to defend even the most indefensible. I’m aware that innocent people go to jail, and some are wrongly executed. I get all that. What I don’t get is this new breed of defense attorneys who only seem to exist to further their own causes–the truth be damned.

If Ms. Lyon’s appearance on the Today show was supposedly to promote her book why did she end up spending an awful lot of time talking about Casey Anthony? Was the book really the reason she was on national television? Would her book have brought her on the Today show if she WEREN’T defending Casey Anthony? I wonder.

I thought “kid” was an odd choice of word as well. The effect was not a good one IMO.

I think Casey is the real burden to her defense. Her actions, her statements, her behavior, her interaction with family and friends all make it next to impossible to defend her.

I agree with you. The intense coverage Casey’s case has received was carefully planned by the defense. That plan was put into place when they decided to fight the gag order. The louder they cry wolf the guiltier they are of creating the problem.

I love the passion in this! There is no doubt in my mind the anguish felt when Bruce Lee – great name! – was missing, the massive relief when he was found and the sorrow over his injury. I truly hope he recovers fully.

I am so glad that there are Vets like the one you have for Bruce. I am so hoping he will make a full recovery. Usually with the kind of care that it sounds like he is getting dogs do just wonderful, and show us what a wonderful gift they are. I will remember to talk to St. Francis about him.
As for Andrea and her ‘conversation’ with Meredith. Her body posture is annoying to me, in that she seems to talk down to Meredith, in fact she has always presented herself in the same fashion, now that I think of it. Her chin is raised, her face uplifted so that her eyes look down the sides of her nose to whomever she is speaking to. There is no emotional clues as to how she feels about what she is saying, and her legs are crossed, as are her hands, closed to any other views….Her speech is defiant, and final, as if there are no other words. Its how Casey looked when the detectives were questioning her, and how Baez looked as the media questioned him. I guess the old adage is true that birds of a feather….
It has to be pretty scarey to be who she is,advocating the abolishment of the death penalty and also be defending Casey Anthony. It’s kind of both sides of the issue, now isn’t it?

Right on!! Great post and perfect insight on why the public is so outraged when the defense dismisses evidence like it doesn’t exist. Like we are all either very stupid, or crazy like her client.

I hope Andrea Lyon reads the blogs, and will please stop going to the media to place blame and complain about the media, and try to realize that her and Baez’s little media bits are NOT helping their client who they are supposed to defend.

It is having a very negative impact on the public.

She keeps wanting to hamanize her clients, but what about HERSELF? She is a bully and a liar, and the jury will see right through her. At least Johnny Cochran was likeable, even if you didn’t agree with what he said. Baez and Lyon are not.

There is just no Way whatsoever Casey Anthony will be able to walk away from this in spite what her Defense Team wants us to believe.
The State will have more Proof to show Casey Anthony is responsible for what happened to her own Daughter than the Defense will have Proof she is innocent of this Crime. All the Defense can do is establish reasonable Doubt and I don’t believe they will be successful doing even that!
What really rubbed me the wrong Way among so many Statements Ms. Lyon made “She didn’t kill her kid.”

    Hello Mystery and All!

How right you are, sadly there are so many of us that have reacted to a lost pet in this fashion. That being said, I cannot imagine the reaction of a lost child. Once years ago my sisters and I took all of our children to a holiday celebration at a local place. It is a massive place where you walk through all of these old historical homes, and end up at the banquet hall where the kids have cider and doughnuts. My son who was three at the time literally disappeared before my eyes. It was only minutes but in those minutes I could not breathe. Of course to him, he had to pee so what was the big deal?
Case in point? Five minutes of my child missing was agony and torture. In those five minutes I did every what if scenario in my head, thiry one days? I would be dead I am sure.
Andrea Lyon can have degrees in everything possible, yet her choice of words today ie: the kid; made her no better than Casey Anthony.
The defense continues to cry that the media has made it impossible for her to get a fair trial. Time and again I have said WHY DOES THE DEFENSE KEEP FEEDING THE MEDIA? We don’t see the prosecutors office doing interview after interview. In the end when Casey Anthony sits on death row, she will only have herself to blame, well herself and her lawyers….

It’s not just Ms. Angel of Death Row, it’s all the others, including Cindy and George Anthony, Casey, Lee, and the rest of the defense team. They all have avoided (from day 31) the name of the “kid”, “snot nose”, “that child”, “that little girl” , “CMA” ad nauseum. I can’t recall hearing “my child” or “my little girl” for that matter. The closest one usually hears is from the grandparents when they say “my granddaughter”.

I love that Linda Drane Burdick and Jeff Ashton say “Caylee” whenever they can. She was a tiny, precious human being worthy of being called by her name.

You can bet that the jury will notice this come trial time. I’m preparing a check-sheet for opening arguments in the criminal case to see how often the State and the defense use her name.

Lyon did get one thing correct. Casey is a witch!

How many parents out there have lost their child for a few minutes (myself included) and you absolutely PANIC. I took my 3 sons (2,4 and 6) to the beach one day in N.H. where we lived about 20 years ago, and my middle son Jeremy was 4 and disappeared from the other two while I was fixing lunch from a cooler. It happened so fast. I freaked out, ran up and down the beach screaming at everyone that my little boy was gone. I had to look towards the ocean and also on the beach as I was running. I ran to police on horses crying and begging them to help me find him. It was just a normal reaction when a child goes missing even for a few minute. It only lasted about 10 minutes, but at the time……it seemed like hours.
He had wandered over to another family, playing with their kids in a puddle of water, like nothing was wrong. I remember shaking all over and feeling sick at my stomach, and feeling like my heart would explode, when I finally found him.
So my point is……….As a parent (and most jurors will likely be) you KNOW the fear you feel. You KNOW that the last thing in the world you would do would be to do NOTHING like Casey Anthony did.

    I know what you mean.

My youngest went missing when he was 3. I was outside working in the flower bed and he and his dog were right there one minute and gone the next. I looked for 10 or 15 minutes and called 911. The police and the entire neighborhood was looking and my husband and I had worked ourselves into hysterics— when here he came with the dog and some older lady. He had chased the dog around the corner and up another street and then got lost. She had taken him inside and tried to get him to tell her where he lived and for some reason he wouldn’t tell her who he was or where he lived even though he knew.

Like you, that was the single most terrifying day of my life and one of the reasons I got so interested in Caylee’s case. I can tell you from my own experience that I believe there is no way in the world Casey Anthony could have continued on with business as usual if she had lost her child and had no hand in it. It’s just not humanly possible.

As for the defense, and Ms. Lyon in particular never mentioning Caylee’s name, you’d have to ask Richard Hornsby for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is standard practice in a murder case. Not a good idea to humanize the victim. If that is part of their strategy I think they will fail miserably in this instance.

I agree with you 10000000%! Casey’s lack of emotion, inaction, and lies will convict her of murder. What she did cannot be explained in any way other than SHE IS GUILTY. If she were not guilty, she would have been inconsolable and could not have pretended otherwise. She would have immediately sought help to find Caylee.

You will hate me for this but where was the leash for Bruce Lee the Wonder Dog?? Our Syndy dog is always in a fenced in yard or on the leash, it’s the law here in our town. I do hope he does fully recover and maybe there is more to the story we don’t know.

About Casey, she was Caylee’s mom, the one responsible for her well-being. When you say someone kidnapped my daughter people pay attention and will look and look day and night. But when you add that when you left work and went to pick up your daughter from the baby sitter and it is found out that you did not work for two years and there is no one by that name, people also pay attention but in a different way.

Though Casey’s lies, her families lies and her attorney’s lies it has turned this all into an Orlando witch hunt. We and the media want to kill the witches, they are all evil and the more they lie the more we want to light the fire under them. Had Casey told the truth we would all know what happened and how it happened. The trial would be over and Casey would be paying for what ever she had done. There would probably be no death penalty but rather a long prison term, maybe shorter with a plea deal.

So if this is a witch hunt, who created it, who perpetuates it and who keeps bringing it up? The witches themselves. I say burn them all at the stake and get them out of Florida and that would remove the cruel punishment they are burdening us with.

As far as I know no one from the State has ever went public with comments on this case….they choose to try it in the court room not the air waves.

Mystery…sorry to hear about Bruce…what a wonderful man your Vet is.
I would say he truly loves animals…May God Bless him and Bruce Lee..I do hope he recovers fully…looks like he has a lot of us pulling for him.

I could never hate you, John! I actually got on them all the time for letting Bruce out without a leash. They have been beating themselves up about that and still are. My husband is going to help my son build a run for Bruce before he comes home so this won’t ever happen again. Don’t think there is more to the story than that.

Update on Bruce: He’s out of his second surgery and resting comfortably on a big soft fluffy doggy bed in his hospital cage–this was what the vet said when he called our daughter-in-law.

I agree with you that if there is a witch hunt it was and is still being perpetuated by the “witches” themselves–

    Hi Mand! How are you?

I don’t think there’s much chance that the defense is gonna “zip their lips” anytime soon. As long as anyone will put them on the air, they are gonna flap em’. I doubt the Today show would have had Lyon on to promote her book if she had refused to talk about the case. JMO.

Thanks about Bruce. I posted an update about him in my comment to John above yours. I and my family appreciate everyone’s concern and prayers for him.

I want to share my opinion of what the defeses startegy will be: I have 2 of them. As a paralegal, I automatically think in black and white in these tyoes of situations. I do not think that Casey Anthony is innocent, nor do I believe these two theories that I am about to give, but they are what I would go with if I was working on her case:

My first scenario is that Casey anthony suffers from a personality blackout disorder. She simply goes in and out of two personalities, and doesnt remember a thing about what she does when she is in the other personality. If you look at all the interviews with all of the people closest to her, this will make alot of sense. Alot of people have said that she will ask them about something or tell them something and then when they bring it back up at a later time she acts completely oblivious like she cant remember and completely denies it.

So…if in fact she did something to her child, she may not know it.

I wonder how much psych evaluation the defense has ordered….

    Second defense:

After she left “for work” on the 16th, and came back after her dad went to work (something she probably normally does) Cailie accidentally got outside and fell into the pool. maybe her and casey were playing in the pool, came in, and casey left the ladder up. Anyways, so case gets online or starts texting and thinks cailie is taking a nap or plaing in her room. When casey goes to check on her, she isnt there. She finds her dead in the pool and panics. She knows her mom will hate her for this and never let her live it down. She wraps caylee up and places her inside her truck trying to figure out what to do with her. She probably, in that small amount of time searched for Chloroform on the computer to see how much of it would be found in caylees system or something about the pool having chloroform in it. She probably also searched for household weopons and neckbreaking to figure out how to make caylees death look like something that it wasnt, (taking the direct blame off herself) She also frantically placed a number of phone calls in a very short period of time. probably because she was scared.

My first gut thought was that casey was using chloroform to put cailie to sellp while she paried, and accidentally killed her. but that wont make sense, because george saw them around 2. and her boyfriend tony lazzaro saw her around 6 and they did not go out. they ordered pizza and rented movies.

Both good theories, but neither will do much good, IMO

In order for the defense to use a multiple personality disorder, Casey would have to use insanity as a defense–very difficult to pull off, plus she would have to admit she could have killed her child.

The accidental death theory would have been the best to use–if she had come clean early on. It also doesn’t explain the duct tape around the mouth.

hmm. ur right. i have no opinion about what happened to caylee. nothing makes sense, except that casey is a monster.
