FBI questioning employees of company that certified Tammi Smith as a colon cleansing practitioner in the Gabriel Johnson case

January 14, 2010

The FBI is questioning employees of a San Antonio company that licenses colon-cleansing practitioners in the disappearance of Gabriel Johnson. The International Association of Colon Hydrotherapists certified Tammi Smith, the woman who along with her husband had been trying to adopt Gabriel.  Tammi and  Jack Smith have been named “persons of interest” in the case.

Is it a coincidence that Elizabeth Johnson, Gabriel’s mother, was last seen with him on December 26th in a motel in San Antonio that is located only about a block away from the organization’s offices?

Kim Hale, commander of investigations for the Tempe Police Department said,  “It’s a long shot, but we’re questioning people there to see if there is a connection. Our focus continues to be in San Antonio where the child was last seen.”

After learning that police had contacted the organization,  Tammi Smith, listed as the owner of  Healing Waters in Sun City West and in Glendale said,

“I have nothing to say about that. That’s retarded. I’ve never been to the office in San Antonio. I’ve talked to people there and called them. Nobody from the FBI has called us, yet. This whole thing is ridiculous. I have begged and begged for them to ask us questions – nobody will ask us questions, nobody will come to our home.”

Smith talked with Johnson again on Wednesday.  She said that Elizabeth gave her another story of where she left Gabriel.  “She said she gave the baby away to a couple inside the motel room. She said she put the baby in the car seat and signed a paper giving custody of the child to the couple. She said the couple knew it was a phony state adoption. She said she stayed inside the room while the couple took the baby out to the car and said she didn’t know what the car looked like.”

The woman was described as in her mid 30’s, was 5’1″-5’3″, blond hair and weighbing between 110 to 125 pounds. The man was described as tall with dark hair.

Police have yet to determine for certain whether Elizabeth Johnson really did give her child away or if she killed him as she claimed to Logan McQueary, Gabriel’ father.  At this time they believe Gabriel is still alive.

When Elizabeth was arrested in Florida she had around $500 with her.

Hale said,  “We know originally, she sold a couple of dogs, she had a roommate that gave her about $400, and she had some social services assistance. When you start adding up all that, we estimated she had about $1,200 when she left. By the time you start calculating the drive, gas, motel stays and shopping in Miami, and her having about $500 cash on her at the time of her arrest, the numbers don’t add up. Somewhere along the way, she came into some extra funds.”Investigators are also using a GPS tracking device taken from the car Johnson abandoned in San Antonio to follow her trail up until the time she got on a bus to Miami.

A $5000 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers of San Antonio for the safe return of baby Gabriel.

If you have information about Gabriel’s whereabouts, please call (210) 224-7867.

You can also call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678.

Tips can be submitted online at, or by text-messaging “Tip 127 plus your tip” to CRIMES (274637).

If anyone knows of Gabriel Johnson’s whereabouts, they also can call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678.

Wow.  The Smiths’ connection to this is getting more and more strange.  Is it really a coincidence that the organization that certified Tammi Smith in her colon cleansing business is located less than a block away from where Elizabeth was staying?  It makes you wonder if Smith had a friend or connection in the main offices that assisted Elizabeth in hiding or selling her baby.  I’m not saying there’s no such thing as a coincidence BUT….I hope like heck this isn’t one.

There are a whole lotta things not adding up with the Smiths’ and they have correctly been identified as “persons of interest” IMO.   Nancy Grace, who remains one of their staunchest defenders and has them on her show almost nightly, needs to take off her rose-colored glasses and start asking them the tough questions.

Kudos to LE in Tempe and San Antonio for leaving no stone unturned in the search for Gabriel.

Thanks for the link. Personally I find this questionable don’t you?

Here’s what she said on January 4th

I live in WI, but am currently in San Antonio, TX. My husband and I are adopting a handsome baby boy that was placed into our care on January 1. I’ve decided to make my project life about Baby Gabriel. Even though I won’t be home when my project arrives I am clicking away taking his photo here in San Antonio.

Honestly, I don’t know what to make of any of it.

My opinion is that Tammi and Jack need to shut up, stop making media statements, and uninsert themselves from this case. They claim they do not know where Gabriel is or what happened to him. Fine. That’s all we needed to know. Stop booking them for the show, Nancy Grace.

I don’t know what their true involvement is or to what extent. I agree with Mark Klaas that their stories do not jive with their earlier stories.

As far as “Beth”, seems kind of like a phony plant to draw attention away from somebody. Or completely unrelated.

I was floored by that article as well. Although it seems to be some kind of internal family struggle, so there could be a lot more to that story than we know.

But when you add it to the other things we know about the Smiths, it just increases the ever growing cloud of confusion that surrounds them.

There is also the weirdness of her first three kids. Apparently custody was given to the father, a man Tammi claims to have been abusing her.

Jack appears to have stolen his granddaughter and cut off his son.

Tammi cleans colons. (OK, nothing wrong with that, but its such a strange occupation 🙂 )

According to various internet reports, Jack and Tammi have been approaching women like Elizabeth for years or attempting to find a pregnant woman to sell them her baby or talk a young girl into getting pregnant for them.

The connection to the colon cleaning company in San Antonio cannot be coincidence.

The name of Tammi’s relative being used as a possible father on the paperwork Elizabeth completed can also not be coincidence.

The fact that the Smiths have connections in Nashville and Jack makes statements to the effect of if the child is found in Nashville, it has nothing to do with them sure sounds like KC saying other people had access to the car.

Their despicable actions of taking the child, yet not reporting anything to police in order to clear the way for their own ends, and returning him to a mother they knew to be unbalanced and untreated tell us exactly what we need to know about them.

Their striving to stay in the spotlight freaks me out.

I don’t know how much of the stuff I am seeing on the internet is true, but the parts that I know to be true are enough to raise my hackles.

I have also read that they gave Elizabeth the GPS, but failed to tell the police this info, which I saw Tammi talk about on NG when she stated she just thought about it because they used their own GPS to find something the day before.

The constant whining that the police are not asking any questions. BS. They were asked tons of questions, many answers they gave did not ring true, many answers they gave contradict previous and later statements, information was clearly withheld. Again, this reminds me of KC and Jose whining that they were willing to talk to the police and consider answering questions on a question by question basis, which was really a scam to try to get the police to reveal their line of reasoning and investigation without actually providing any information. Why would the police want to speak again with people who already lied to them? The standard police procedure is to ask, then follow-up with old fashioned detective work to verify facts, then determine which facts were lied about, determine the truth, then question again to determine veracity of the suspect by their answers of the known facts and the possibility of new information being true. Otherwise, they will have to siphon off their resources to track down false leads.

My gut feeling is they are liars. They are after something. They have a goal. I don’t know what it is, but it is not the well-being of Gabriel.

I found it rather interesting, especially when you put it together with what both of you have come up with.

It must be! Let’s hope she doesn’t try to finger Kronk or Jesse next.
Seriously this one really reeks of Casey. This girl is so much like her, it’s scary. At the same time that couple is so suspicious. I don’t know if they are just her Cindy and George, or if they are really hiding something.
I truly hope Gabriel is alive, but I’ve got that same sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I can’t shake what she told the baby’s father at first. I pray I’m wrong.

They are DEFINITELY liars, and they definitely have some sort of agenda. Are they the source of the money Elizabeth was found with? I’m thinking maybe, yes. Did they arrange for Elizabeth to end up in San Antonio? They have a definite tie to the area so I’m thinking yes. Has it backfired on them? I’m thinking yes.

Yes, I had heard that about the fake ID–maybe on NG last night. Where did she get the ID? It seems that she had been planning this for a while. Was she planning it with the Smiths?

I agree with you. Although I keep thinking maybe he is alive, my gut tells me that’s a long shot.

The resemblance to the Anthony case is astonishing….Elizabeth and Casey.

MG one is enough now this one comes to light. How many others are out there that
we don’t know about.? Everyone here is suspicious that whatever they utter can’t be
taken as fact….but the police must investigate every tip they receive.

I pray for this beautiful child tho fear the worse has already happened.
I also pray I am wrong.

Mystery, You know what disturbed me about that article besides the fake ID is that she tried to give another man’s name as the “possible father” of Gabriel to the courts and it was Tammi’s cousin. I’m really disturbed by these people’s involvement. I read that link you gave that Renee shared and that’s pretty disturbing as well. I think LE needs to really lean on these people.

This story is about the Tammi meeting, but has different quotes:

My interest is in the last line –

“Police say the jailhouse meeting between the two women was not recorded.”

Just last week, Tammi and Jack were both adamant on Nancy Grace that they would refuse to speak with Elizabeth unless the conversation was recorded and monitored by police. So how did this happen? Since when did jail inmates get to have unrecorded conversations with non-attorneys?

This case is baffling in all its aspects.

More Details including the babysitter stating Elizabeth told her she drugged Gabriel with Tylenol:

Yet another similarity to KC – drugging the baby – although it’s not yet been proven in the Caylee case, the fact that a similar single young mother would even think to do so tells me that this type of thinking may not be uncommon amongst this generation.

This is the best summary of the case I have read and it has more details:

Tammi is quoted admitting to putting her cousin’s name on Elizabeth’s child support paperwork as Gabriel’s father.

It also appears Jack and Tammi attempted to persuade the father to sign the “bogus” adoption paperwork to “trick” Elizabeth into producing the baby. I think this is a blatant attempt to obtain his signature on paperwork, legal or not, declaring he does not want custody, which could then be used as documentation at a later time, like during a custody dispute.

Thanks for all the links–I just posted on the search of the Smiths’ house. I hadn’t seen the one about Elizabeth’s twin brother and grandfather going to visit her in the jail and being refused access. Shades of Casey Anthony for sure!!! This is not looking good, although I still hold out hope that the baby isn’t dead. It didn’t sound to me like her brother has that hope, though. I just can’t stop thinking that if the Smiths’ are involved, the baby could be alive.

Emotionally, this all reminds me of the first month of the Caylee case. I used to hope Cindy was telling the truth. In fact, I used to believe Cindy because I did not want to tred down the path the police were blazing.

The rays of hope in this case are that in the long run the Smiths have no reason on earth to protect Elizabeth and the police are still doggedly tracking the trail of a live baby.

Well now Tammi has been arrested. She’s been an odd ball from the get go. I actually was glad Nancy Grace had her on so much because it made her look worse. She was too much of a chatty Kathy, it made her look guilty, people who are guilty seem to talk too much like she did. Also, I found it odd mostly that they hardly knew Gabriel’s mother yet treated her like family, then were shocked to be duped??? Well they didn’t know her why be shocked? Second, the fact that they wanted Gabriel so quickly and seemed upset about the “adoption” because the dad didn’t want his son adopted. She made it sound like he, logan, was in the way or something. Normal people would have walked away from this if the dad didn’t want to go thru with it, but she kept persuing it.

Hi Hadley–Janet Morris–that’s the person with the innocent looking website, right? I hadn’t thought about her being part of anything but, you know, that’s a good point. It is an underground. What a strange comment on her website about something that had nothing to do with what she’s selling. But, then, the woman, Beth, who wrote it has been checked out apparently. It was a coincidence and they adopted an infant. That’s what I read at least.
