Is Casey Anthony’s defense team a sinking ship?

February 17, 2010

Has the money dried up?  According to WFTV reporter Kathi Belich, she talked with a lawyer who was told Casey Anthony and her family couldn’t afford to pay anyone.

The Anthonys and their faithful lawyer, Brad Conway, were allegedly looking for a new lawyer to represent Casey–one that was willing to forfeit their paycheck for a future payday.  Orlando attorney, Robert Buonauro told WFTV news that the Anthonys and Conway approached him, and were looking to replace Jose Baez early on in the case.  Buonauro said Conway told him that the Anthonys were broke and if he could do without a retainer, there was the possibility of a defense fund or book or movie deal down the pike.  Buonauro turned them down

According to WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer, a red flag that the defense is financially in trouble is the fact they haven’t started to depose even major witnesses yet in the death penalty case.   Depositions are a lot of work and cost a lot of money.

read it here:

I don’t know if the money has dried up, but I do know that another year or so before this thing goes to trial was not what a lot of Casey Anthony’s attorneys and “professional” experts thought they were signing up for.  Is the resignation of Marti MacKenzie just the beginning of a mass exodus?  Could Casey Anthony end up with the defense team she deserved all along—a novice public defender, or worse—-Jose solo?

Thanks for the link, mikka!

midget–yes it does. You know, I don’t know that I think there was ever much more than the promise of a big payday for any of them. Yes, they’ve sold some pictures for a couple of hundred thousand dollars, but, really, how far does that go if they are trying to pay some of those high powered attorneys’ expenses,(including their attorney) their own (now high end) expenses, etc. etc. with no other income coming in? Doesn’t go far…

Ok, Mikka–who goes next? I say Biden. Baez will hold on til the bitter end….

Yes, Cindy was verrry sneaky. Actually, I don’t think she or George made any bones about the fact they disliked Baez.

Hey Mystery! I don’t believe they are broke, but maybe stretched. I do think Baden will be the next to go.

I remember clearly when Cindyloo didn’t like Baez, and George said he didn’t trust him and
they wanted to replace him but that peetered out.

Is the SS Baez sinking? It may be sinking faster than the TITANIC, but Baez – Lyon and Baden
will continue wearing their inflatable vests so as not to go under completely.
    Only time will tell.
Book, movie and more interviews will be forthcoming and the Anthonys will be filling up their donation jars once again……..perhaps they never really stopped.

We have a long way to go before trial, so who will be the next to jump ship?

    It’s a Mystery to me.!!!

What if the defense is just playing the *Im broke card* to get the state to pay for there case, thinking that the state will take the death pentaly off the table or just to cost the state of Florida more money, revenge!!

I just hope the Anthonys don’t have another “Media Blitz”…

Geraldo is probably giving Baez money, thinking he will write a book, or have a television movie about Casey down the line.

IMO The trail should have started months ago. What’s holding them up? Does Lyon have another class?

Some wealthy DP atty. will probably step in soon, just to get the publicity. They need to get moving, one way or the other!

    Hey niecey!

I dunno! If the anonymous donor family that was footing the bill has pulled the plug, things could go south pretty quickly.

But of course, the whole lot of them could hit the talk show circuit and pull some new photos out of their bag of tricks–

Where did the notion that an “anonymous donor family” come from? Who the heck would be stupid enough to donate to that crew?

Got a feeling that the ‘anonymous’ family involves a member of the defense team, and the ‘donation’ involved pro-bono work, in lieu of book and movie rights down the road.

You know each attorney on the defense will write a book about this when it’s all said and done, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t some prosecuting attorneys doing the same.

    LOL, Sanny!

You are probably right—The key players have already got too much invested in their “future” to take the first life boat out. Others may come and go, but I’m betting Baez for sure, and most likely Lyon, are in it til the bitter end. Hey! Loyalty is a virtue! 😉

Patty–Not sure it’s a rumor. Anybody remember where that statement originated and if it’s believed to be fact or not? Spacely???

sophie–you may be right. You know, after all is said and done, I would be very interested in reading a book that the prosecution wrote about this case.

I don’t have a link to put in here, but the donor family is not a rumor. Jose has stated that the spokespeople were paid for by an anonymous family in Conneticut.

If you want to check this out, look for articles around the time Todd Black / Gil Cabot got replaced by Marti. You can also check back about the time Todd Black / Gil Cabot stuck his foot in his mouth and admitted KC was the murderer, which was slightly before his ID got verified and he got taken off the case. During those periods, a lot of media started attacking Jose about revealing KC is guilty, he got all whiney about it and blamed the spokesguy, stating that Black did not work directly for Jose, but for a firm that was hired by an anonymous family in CT that believed in KC’s innocence. Jose repeated this when Marti began work.

So, the question is not if the anonymous family is a rumor, but who is the family? I think the family part is a lie. I believe it is a media/entertainment corporation that has licensed KC’s story because there specific legal advantages to having such deals signed in CT. They have a vested interest in her being found innocent as it will make a better story. After several media blunders by Jose early on, they hired the PR firm that employs Cabot and Marti. But is this all they have paid for or have they been funding the defense all along? I believe they have and that Marti’s departure is a sign they have determined their losses must end. The story will still sell even if she is guilty, so no more money needs be wasted on her defense at this time. They probably did not plan for this lengthy a process. Or perhaps the entire deal has fallen through.

My other theory is that the family is a rich family that is connected to the mystery of Caylee’s father. Perhaps he was a rich college kid that KC banged, they know who she is, they know she knows who they are, they don’t want to be identified with this case, so they agreed to secretly fund the defense, but even they have run out of money.

    Hope this helps:
“Plus, the public relations firm for Casey Anthony`s defense says it`s being paid by an unidentified family. Who is this family? And could they also be paying for Casey`s high-profile defense team?”

OMG, that americaspeaks link is a riot!!

I had no idea there were so many people who still believe that KC is innocent.

However, I did notice several of the pro-KC commenters were actually the same person using multiple names – this particular blogger should really learn to spell as he/she makes the same spelling mistakes in multiple entries.

    Spacely and Niecey

Thanks for the refresher course, Spacely, and for the link, Niecey. I tend to think it’s the first scenario, Spacely. I don’t think they expected it to go on this long either, and I don’t think they expected it to be this costly. No book or made-for-tv movie could possibly bring in enough money to offset their ever growing expense plus make them a tidy profit IMO.

I tend to go with my first theory, too.

But I’ve been thinking about the case a lot over the past couple of weeks. And I keep coming back to fact that there are at least 3 mysteries involved in this case.

    1) Who killed Caylee? We all believe it is KC and I have never seen any evidence that points to anyone else.

    2) Who is Caylee’s father? Can it really be coincidence that the same little girl who gets horribly murdered by her mother is also the same little girl who no father will claim and not one single person other than the mother has any idea who it is? Is it really possible that Cindy never confronted KC about this and never got an answer? Why all the secrecy? Even if KC doesn’t know for sure, I am positive she could narrow it down to a list of 20 or less. Why did she never sue for support? Why did she lie to multiple people about who the father is?

    3) Why is Jose representing KC? What did he see that first day that made him accept this case? Can it really be coincidence that he is involved with a penniless beggar who instigated the above two mysteries?

How many mysteries can you cram into one case? How can they all be coincidence? Why is there so much to hide?
