Indigency Hearing today in the Casey Anthony case
FINAL WORD: Ruling deferred
Baez conveniently left records of where other money has gone at the “office.” Strickland wants an accounting of that money in writing. He told the JAC that they have the right to be present when he gets that info but they would have to be there in person.
All 4 attorneys say they are pro-bono except Baez has personally accepted $89,000. Lyon has collected $11,000 in expenses. $275,000 has been collected-$5000 from a private donor, 200,000 from ABC and $70,000 from Todd Macaluso. Baez says no money is left.
New attorney introduced: Cheney Mason. He says all attorneys are working pro bono. They wanted to discuss how the money they’ve already spent was used “in camera” but Judge Strickland said, nope, it’s gonna be in open court. The 4 attorneys, Baez, Lyon, Kenny Baden, and Mason have gone to another room to discuss exactly what they’ll say. (Don’t think they were planning on having to talk about this stuff publicly.)
UPDATE: Strickland HAS unsealed the “new discovery” documents. Motion states: the prosecution became aware that Casey Anthony had become close friends with a female inmate and Casey began writing to her. They aren’t confessions but investigated the writings.
The much anticipated Casey Anthony indigency hearing will take place today at 11:00 AM EST. She will be in attendance, and her parents are expected to be there as well.
Judge Strickland may decide today whether Casey Anthony should be declared indigent, and will review the court clerk’s declaration.. The JAC (Justice Administrative Commission) has voiced some serious concerns about her claim, and Jose Baez may be required to provide more detailed information as to why he wants her declared indigent. Anthony’s situation is considered unusual because an indigent request is normally filed early on in a case, and she has already put $111,000 toward her own defense. Jose Baez has refused to say where that money came from and it is possible that he may be required to pay some of the expenses going forward depending on how much and on what he has spent the funds she turned over to him.
Meanwhile, prosecutors say the new discovery Judge Strickland sealed last month while they investigated it, can now be revealed. There has been much speculation as to what that discovery might be–from River Cruz’ claim that George Anthony told her Caylee’s death was an accident a month before her body was discovered, to Dominic Casey revealing any “secrets” he might have been harboring.
And last but not least, the state attorney’s office says they will be releasing around 1000 pages of new documents in the case later this week or next week. They didn’t reveal what the documents might contain.
