J. Cheney Mason–Casey Anthony’s newest attorney

March 18, 2010

We were introduced to a new member of Casey Anthony’s defense team this morning at her indigency hearing.  J. Cheney Mason is the newest attorney to throw his hat into this ever growing ring, and his participation may be the best thing that ever happened to Casey Anthony.

Mr. Mason began his practice in 1971 in Orlando, Florida.  His areas of expertise are Criminal Defense, Marital and Family Law (Divorce Law) Entertainment Law and Trial Practice.  His emphasis is Marital and Family Law and Criminal Law.  He is a Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyer, and certified by both The Florida Bar and the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

He is one of the top defense lawyers in the country and has tried 50 murder cases successfully.  He is an anti-death penalty advocate.

You can find out more at his website : jcheneymason

According to WFTV analyst, Bill Sheaffer,

This is a game changer. Cheney is a founding father of the Central Florida Criminal Defense Association. You do not come any larger than J. Cheney Mason.”

Sheaffer went on to say,

“J Cheney Mason absolutely believes he can win this case. I would liken this case to the OJ Simpson case.”

Cheney came out swinging this morning stating,

“I’ve been asked to join and I’m doing it pro bono. We’re just seeking confirmation of Ms. Anthony’s indigency and I don’t think that should be in question.”

It’s rumored that the addition of Mason may indicate that Andrea Lyon will be exiting the case soon.

    mikka, I agree 100 %.
Cheney Mason spoke very disrespectful to Judge Strickland.
Also he comes of as a Hot Head with a bad Temper.
I am sure glad he believes he can win this Case.
Myself I will not hold my Breath for that to happen I rather wait and see till the Trial starts and All the Evidence will be presented.
It should be interesting say the least!

Conway just on insession saying he’s gonna file a new motion so the Ant’s can go visit the criminal but he wants the video & audio sealed untill after the trial is over. this is a new spin on the old motion that was rejected about having no video during visits.
    they still want special treatment

Hi Mystery! Wow Cheney Mason who pissed in your post toasties!!!! I totally agree Mikka he IS a rude old man! I have to imagine that is why KC and her parents were all smiles today. But I have a feeling that the truth will prevail regardless of this horribly disrepectful jerk of an attorney. I was hoping Strickland would tell him, ‘Exuse me this is MY courtroom!” The actors I mean the Anthony’s tried to look like the happy old married couple but they are full of it if they think anybody bought it. IMO, this Cheney guy is such a twit, after all his yelling and directing the show I believe he too will follow the footsteps of Bozo and the Anthony’s and make some blood money off of this case by writing own book in the future and conducting his own book tour. How these people can sleep at night is beyond me. I just don’t understand how KC could even smile after such a precious baby girl was murdered in such a way by her hands. UGHHHH!!!!

Strickland is no boob so I imagine he’ll get his fill of this guy pretty quickly. He may have had free reign today but he didn’t get what he wanted on any front. He didn’t get to have the disclosure about the money “in camera” and Strickland didn’t just sign off on what he was asking.

If it were my child, I don’t know that I could ever smile again, let alone smile while I’m sitting in jail accused of her murder.

The state believes the letters, which were exchanged between Anthony and another inmate in protective custody at the Orange County Jail, contain information that has bearing on the murder case against Anthony, including statements made by Anthony which could be used against her in court.

Orange County Jail policy prohibits protective custody inmates from communicating with each other, but Anthony, possibly with the help of a correctional officer, was able to pass around 50 notes to another inmate.

from my friend ss,richard hornsby say

My take is that Cheney Mason came into court expecting to give the good ‘old boy routine and get the home town treatment. Instead he committed the cardinal sin of lawyering; which is forgetting who is the attorney and who is the judge.

I could not believe he asked the judge to tell a nationwide audience that “he trusted him.” It gives the appearance of favoritism, impropriety, and could have lead to Judge Strickland being recused if he said yes.

Also, it was extremely clear that Mr. Mason has no grasp of the current procedure for having a person declared indigent. I surmise he was brought on by Baez to protect Baez from scrutiny – not protect Casey Anthony’s interest.

My odds are that today’s hearing will lead to Jose Baez being investigated by the Florida Bar.

According to that article there are as many as 258 pages of letters. What WAS our girl, Casey thinking? She can’t keep her mouth shut even when there’s no one around to talk to!

The problem according to this article is that she invoked the right to remain silent, so anything that was told to someone working for LE would not be allowed in court. Let’s hope that’s not the case!

Dontcha know Baez is freakin’ out about now? Bet the new guy is wondering why he thought it might be fun to work on this case….

I thought this lawyer was right out of the Andy Griffith show when I first saw him. After reading a bit, realized the is the betting lawyer who backed out of the bet.

So he thinks he can make Casey walk right out of the courthouse huh! I wonder how he would have defended my four year old daughter.

My daughter Christie and her mom were home alone. Christie was just given a new set of crayons and was sitting in her room coloring at her little desk. Mom walks into the kitchen and does some chores for 10 minutes. Mom walks to the front of the house and starts down the hall to Christie’s room. Mom looks at the wall in the hall and sees crayon all over. Mom says to Christie, “did you do this”? Christie says “no mommy I did not do it someone else did”. Ok mister smarty pants lawyer lets see you get Christie off this one. BTW, that is probably the worst thing my daughter ever did.

Is Casey any different, last person with Caylee?????

Hi Mystery and everyone, new smart elec talking old cogger Lawyer, Casey smirking and laughing, George and Cindy looking like Happy Lovebird’s that just won the lottery. Even Linda Kenney Baden showed up for this one. It all means nothing to me as i know Caylee has the highest power on her side and no one defeats him. Anytime i start to feel down about this case i remember this and then i know Casey is not walking out of this one as a free woman and Caylee will get the justice she deserves. The rest of the scum bags will answer as well to Caylee’s higher power defender in the end as well. So it is all good.

Yes, this case is starting to read like one of those penny novels. Stranger than fiction. A writer couldn’t come up with stuff like this, and if he did, he’d scrap it because he would think no one would find it believable.

Regarding the ‘inmate letters’…….does anyone here actually believe that Casey would tell another living human being that she killed Caylee or even had a part in her demise?
I can’t……Casey is a Sociopath, a true liar to the enth degree. She would never put herself in that position. Naturally this is only my own opinion.
If there is anything at all in those many 50 or so letters, it would be that Casey is or has pointed her crooked finger towards someone else…..but never herself.
Remember SHE IS A VICTIM TOO…..as she told Cindy – Mommy Dearest.

As for George & Cindy in court today……..I saw a visible wall between them while they sat in the back row……..definitely something is not happy in their Loving Little Household right now.
She ignored George completely as he sat alone and she left to either go potty or make a cell call……maybe to her own latest ‘cutie’. Who knows!!!!

Mason will imo be replacing Lion Lyon…..and he is calling his participation in this case ‘fun’…..I’m sure everyone heard him say that. With his background he may feel very confident that Casey will walk right out of jail and into the loving arms of JoJo and Mommy Dearest.

Again, Lee was an absentee today. What ever happened to his profound ‘loyalty’ to Casey…CMA…..CMA…..CMA.

Everyone connected to this case has forgotten the main VICTIM here.
Her name is Caylee Marie Anthony – age 2 and some months old.

Tomorrow is Casey’s BD……..which has been reported in all the media…..who gives a Sh*t…..
Caylee never reached the age of 3……..think about that!!

Talking to reporters today, Mason said, “This case is going to be fun to try, and we will walk out of here with Casey in arm.”

Belich asked Mason if his arrival was a game-changer for the defense. “I guess when a jury says not guilty, we’ll find out,” Mason replied. But defense attorney Andrea Lyon shook her head in the affirmative and mouthed the word, “Yes.”

Yet today, Kealing said Mason “was long on confidence today, but short on success.”

Sanny, it would not be the first time inmates spilled the beans so to speak. I can’t imagine what she might tell someone but being so isolated as she is supposed to be, I would think she would grab onto any person to talk to. Besides the isolation she is only 24 and has not learned how to be alone for any length of time. I guess it’s called “stir-crazy” and any one she could communicate with, (besides LE) would be like telling your best friend a secret.

Maybe she was describing how Caylee was interfering with her social life or things she did during the two years she was supposed to be working. There is so much she could say thinking it is small talk that might reveal her thinking at the time she killed Caylee. It must be important or LE would not have spent more than 30 days on it.

Now lets hear from LE about George and his romance!

Well it’s good she has a pen pal. I mean, now that “her life has been taken away from her” (boo hoo) she needs a hobby. I hope she contradicted herself in the letters so there’s even more lies to throw back at her during her trial.

On a side note regarding her “protective custody” status, Casey-haters will be happy to know it’s not a luxury suite. My husband recently did a job at the jail where she’s at and said she’s in the psych ward area, where all of the worst behaviors are. He said it smelled like crap soooo bad in there it gagged him walking down the hall. That’s cause Casey shares the same wing as the inmates who do fecal smearing.

Ahhh, it makes me smile just thinking about it. 🙂

What a kick in the butt for the defense! Here they are introducing a new lawyer and at the same hearing the State releases evidence that their famous client has somewhat spilled her guts in this case to two other inmates. 😆
Can this get any better? Yes, it will. I am just grinning from ear to ear!
All the hype in this case (new lawyer, George’s affair, the twins, Baez’s money schemes) will not cover up the evidence in this case. The evidence will convict Casey. I cannot wait to see Mr. Ashton in action.

    Sanny,

I agree with John–Casey wouldn’t intentionally give away anything, but a lot can be found out from those notes. Yep, she’s a sociopath, no doubt, but she could easily have revealed a wealth of information in her non-stop babbling small talk if her writing style is anything like her speaking style.

I saw that wall between the Anthonys’ too and all the hand holding (notice how far apart they are walking even if they are holding hands) in the world can’t disguise it.

As for this new guy–well, we shall see if his bark is worse than his bite. He’s awfully cocky and seems to have the dream team and Casey in awe of him.

I agree with you on everything you said. She could have let all kinds of little things slip that could add up to a big thing.

    Hi Linda

Yeah, I wonder if they were back in that little room calling Macaloser yesterday putting their story together. Did Judge Strickland ask to see the proof that he gave them $70,000? I didn’t hear him ask for it specifically.

I love it that Casey’s in there with the fecal smearers–

Yep, I wonder how confident this Mason guy will be after he realizes what a hornet’s nest he has landed in. She’s notes are just one of many kinks in their wheels.

We just have to remember that no matter what, it’s impossible to get around the fact that Casey didn’t EVER report her daughter missing, and most likely wouldn’t have if her mother hadn’t done it. Also can’t get around the trunk of the car. Not possible.

You know what the really good news about these notes is?

Sure, it is wonderful that they found 248 pages of hand-written material (which probably contains a dozen new Caylee-napped scenarios involving everyone from Kronk to Tucan Sam and a bunch of rants against her mom), but the really good news is that if she wrote all this to one inmate, you just have to believe there is a lot more to others.

248 pages!!! You can’t just give up a habit like that cold turkey when your inmate pen pal moves away – you got to find a new pen pal.

KC ordered more pens as part of her latest canteen purchase (yes, yes, hot peanuts too, but her fiery discharge is her problem) – what do you think she is doing with those pens? Got some more notes to write???

Thanks for the reply John and It’s A Mystery….

Looks like we have another new ‘talking head’ added to the circus.
Talk about a bull in a china shop…..this guy came in like gangbusters with
the 6 shooter in hand. Can we say he’s very much into himself? Baez just
say back and let him lead the way. This gave Baez a much needed amount
of relief that he wouldn’t be dropping his paperwork again, infact coming to
an important hearing regarding INDIGENCY for Casey WITHOUT ANY
PAPERWORK, was laughable. Are they truly that STUPID? or HIDING
    what they DON’T want revealed.

“Perry” Mason stated that he joined this case for ‘FUN’…………..and is confident
that Casey will be proved Not Guilty and will do the walk on his arm.
What a pair he has !!!!!! Mason was invited by Baez because he knew Lyon was
    ineffective and also Laughable.
If Mason thinks this is ‘FUN’ , he should ask CAYLEE how much ‘FUN’ it was for
her to be duct taped and tossed in garbage bags like trash by the very person who was
sitting at the defense table, the Murderer, CMA aka Casey Marie Anthony.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I saw she purchased some new pens. 😆 Would love to have been a fly on the wall while the defense was reading all those notes.

Sanny –I thought it was just incredulous that these people had not already “worked out” where the money was spent. Are they really that arrogant that they would think they would be handed a blank check from the state just on their word?
