Casey Anthony and Company face Judge Perry 4/30/2010
watch it on television at Tru-Tv or online at the links below
Judge Perry appeared promptly at 9:30 AM!
Judge Perry: “Mrs. Drain when will you be prepared to go to trial?”
Mrs. Drain: “The trial date Judge Strickland ordered back in March is reasonable.”
Judge Perry: “Mr. Baez when will you be prepared to go to trial?”
Mr. Baez: “The deadline set forth for expert witnesses is a little ambitious.
Judge Perry: “NO EXCUSES for delays.”
Judge Perry asks if anyone will be asking the jury to be sequestered. Mrs. Drain said the state will ask that.
Baez has an issue with that and wouldn’t commit.
Judge Perry, “If I decide to sequester the jury we will go somewhere to pick them. We will return here to OC. and the trial will be held here.” Judge Perry seems to be favoring that as cheaper than moving the whole trial to another venue.
“If I grant a change of venue, the location will NOT be disclosed (pause) It will not be disclosed until the last minute.”
State estimates 4 weeks for the trial to take place.
Baez estimates 6 weeks to 2 months for the trial to take place.
If Casey Anthony is found guilty of murder in the 1st degree, how long to argue for the state–1 day.
Baez and Lyon to argue their side if she’s found guilty–3 to 5 days.
Drain: “Will we stick with original trial date of May 9 or is it flexible?”
Perry says he would like to do it sooner but they’ve (defense and state) already agreed. Perry is inclined to stick with their schedule BUT once he does that, “I will enter an order and you will be STUCK WITH IT.” In other words, when he states the date for the trial it will be set in stone.
Judge wants to start on May 2 but Lyon has a personal matter and can’t do that–her daughter is graduating college that day. Judge will leave the date as May 9th then.
recap Thursday next week.
week of 9th 10th and 11th hear death penalty motions.
Baez corrected Perry’s use of “Lyons” instead of “Lyon–the roaring lion.” 🙄
This is the closest thing to the famous Baez smirk we got during the whole hour!
All in all, it was a very good day, and I’m starting to think this trial may actually happen–on schedule.
