Sylar Newton: vanished without a trace?

August 3, 2010

It’s been over a week since 2 year old Sylar Newton seemingly vanished from the face of the earth.  He disappeared from Beaver Creek campground in the Coconino National Forest less than 50 miles from Flagstaff, Arizona.  Sylar was camping with Christina Priem, his custodial parent, Christina’s mother, Nancy Collins, and 2 of Christina’s children, a 12 year old girl, and a 14 year old boy.  Another 14 year old boy, a friend of the family, was also with them.

Sylar was sleeping in a tent with Christina, Nancy, and the 12 year old girl. He was last seen by other campers around 9:00 PM, Saturday, July 24th.  He was last seen  by family members at around 12:30 AM, and Christina discovered he was gone when she woke up at 1:45 AM.  After a brief search, 911 was called (by a young boy first, and then by the campground host.)

Police arrived around 3:00AM.  Bloodhounds were brought in,  but his scent didn’t appear to extend beyond the campground.  Every inch of the area in and around Beaver Creek was searched by a bevy of volunteers which included divers at Wet Beaver Creek, and Grey Wolf landfill where the trash from the dumpsters at the camp are delivered.  Police are confident that Sylar is not in the area.  There has been no evidence of foul play–nothing to indicate a wild animal took the boy, no blood found, no anything that might give a clue as to what happened to him.

Yet, after interviewing family members, police announced Monday at a press conference that the investigation has changed from a search and rescue to a criminal investigation.  They stated that they do not believe Sylar is still alive.  They also do not believe that he just wandered off on his own. Based on evidence at the scene, and after interviewing family members, Sheriff’s investigators believe he was taken from the campsite, but they are uncertain whether he was dead or alive at that time.

Huh??  I’m confused here.  How did police get from point A) Sylar Newton is missing. to point B) No trace of him or evidence of fowl play has been found. to C) Sylar Newton is dead.  I can only assume the police have information they haven’t divulged yet for them to publicly state the child is dead.  I also have to wonder about the story Christina Priem is telling police. As the one time parent of more than one  two year old, I can tell you from experience that a child that age doesn’t wake up and quietly disappear into the night.  Two year olds make a lot of noise.  They are also clumsy–not possible for them to “lightly” crawl over someone in a manner that would not wake that person up.  Two year olds are afraid of the dark, clingy with their caregivers, and absolutely do not like to be alone.  What I’m trying to say here is that a two year old would not wake up in the middle of the night in a strange place and willingly and silently crawl over family members and head out into the darkness on his own.
